Teens and Tobacco

Each day in our country, more than 3,500 kids try their first cigarette and another 1,000 kids under the age of 18 become regular, daily smokers.

The impact of tobacco use on teens is often overshadowed by other drugs, but early exposure to nicotine has been linked to an increased risk for mental health disorders, subsequent drug and alcohol addictions, poorer academic achievement and generally poorer health.

In this presentation, we will explore current adolescent tobacco use trends, evaluate the link between adolescent smoking and other drug use, as well as mental health disorders, and gain an understanding of how tobacco cessation interventions can foster positive youth development and improved school climate.
