Kids of Promise (KOP)
Children and adolescents are faced with many challenges throughout their school age years. For students impacted by a loved one’s alcohol or drug addiction, the challenges they face are overwhelming, uncontrollable and life altering.
Children and adolescents often don’t understand why their parent or loved one suffers from alcoholism or drug addiction. They may feel like no one understands their situation or won’t like them if they knew their loved one was sick. In Kids of Promise support groups, students learn that they aren’t alone, that addiction is a disease, and that they can take healthy steps toward improving their self-esteem and making positive choices for their own lives.
- Kids of Promise (KOP) groups are held in school or through a community agency program.
- Groups are curriculum-based, providing a psycho-educational approach for students in grades 2-12.
- They typically run for 8 weeks, meeting once per week, anytime throughout the school year.
- Kids of Promise groups address: the disease model of addiction and addiction as a family disease, recognizing healthy choices and developing coping skills, self-esteem building and learning effective communication skills.
